30 August 2006

Time:

Home to Union Sq, app. 1000hrs - ?
Astor Pl to home, app. 1200hrs - ?
Astor Pl KMart (at the door) to home, on the local (which was in the station when I got there, but which was counterbalanced by a slow, confused trip to Gristede's), app.1825hrs - 53 min

Money:

$3, yogurt and tea at one seriously killer Whole Foods.
$16, underwear and a bottle of Sprite at KMart.
$21, olive oil, pitas, sea salt, and hummus at Gristede's. (I needed the oil and salt anyway.)
$421, 15 schoolbooks (with two more to come...) [didn't come from weekly budget].

More interesting things:

Petted a big red husky with a soft Ratface-Blu-type coat.

Met the last classmate in our section of the bookstore.

Had a homeless (I guess) guy say, "Look at that beautiful smile!" after I finished with the aforementioned husky; might have confused him when I replied with "Hey, thanks! You, too!" even though he didn't have a lot of teeth.

Saw a breakdancing troupe decked out in red and black across from the library; it was clear that they deserved that above-ground corner more than some groups I've seen in the subway stations.

Got a library card, but also, more gloriously, a researcher's access card, for which I got to walk between my Lions and under spectacular ceiling murals (what's the proper name for those things?)

Discovered, in looking at photos on his door, that my professor once had a ponytail. Very cool. (Still don't know what I'm doing or, worse, whether I'll ever actually get to work with this particular guy: less cool, but it'll get figured out.)

More Interesting Things I Haven't Done Yet:

Gone to that bread bakery at the corner of my street. It looked so bright and inviting through the rain the other day that I'll have to try it one of these days.
